Wednesday! It’s the last hump day before finals week - students are
sitting in their last lectures and preparing to buckle down for finals
week.
Per usual, on Wednesdays we share a collection showcase work.
Today is a set of two prints, Dark Lion and Light Lion, an etching from
1649 by Wenzel Holler.
We hope you feel as glamorous as these lions
come the end of finals - these manes give L'Oreal hair models a run for
their money.
Considering the artist, Wenzel (or Wenceslaus, if you’re
feeling formal) lived from 1607-1677 and was an active artist in both
England and Germany (in Germany, he was more commonly known as Wenzel,
whereas Wenceslaus was his English identity). His family was ruined by
the Sack of Prague in the Thirty Years’ War, and the young Hollar, who
had been destined for law school, decided now was the time to become an
artist. He’s created some 2740 printing plates, featuring portraits,
ships, religious material, heraldic subjects, landscapes, and still life
in many different forms. He also produced a series of architectural
views of Antwerp Strasbourg cathedrals. Almost complete collections of
Hollar’s work are kept in the British Museum, the print room at Windsor
Castle, and the National Gallery in Prague.

I was wondering if you remember where you found the picture of the
Chevron Station in Markleeville CA. I live in Markleeville, (and
actually work at the now Markleeville General Store). I have never seen
that picture of the building before! You posted it in June 2014 so I
know it's a stretch, but I'd really appreciate it if you have any
recollection.
